CHURCH RECORDING RETURNS TO ART SOCIETY

Wirral Art Society was involved in Church Recording right from the start, from 1973 onwards, with support from the Victoria and Albert Museum and Church authorities – Dorothy Brining, our late President, was one of the first people involved with Church Recording as a volunteering activity (for NADFAS, as the Art Society was then known) and continued to be involved with Church Recording on the Wirral until her death in 2022.  Wirral Art Society Church Recorders have recorded 36 churches and will complete their final record this year, for St. Mary & St. Helen Parish Church, Neston.

In 2021, Church Recording Society was formed by the Church Recorders themselves to take over being the national society for the church recording project, although Church Recording Groups continued to be  affiliated to The Arts Society.

At the 2026 AGM, it was announced that Church Recording will once again become a volunteering activity of The Arts Society.

Recording the Past for the Future

The Arts Society Wirral Church Recorders produce a detailed inventory, including photographs, of a church’s furnishings - memorials, metalwork, woodwork, textiles, stonework, pictures, books and windows. Ours is a particularly experienced group, having started recording Wirral churches in 1982 and currently recording the lovely and very interesting St Mary & St Helen Parish Church in Neston.

When completed, a detailed illustrated book is produced and presented to the church, copies being sent to the Diocese Office, national libraries, national Church authorities, the V&A Art Library and the Church Recording Society.

Each church has its own separate identity and treasures.

However, until The Arts Society began this work, no such scheme existed for British churches, so Church Recording is an important part of our heritage. Our Church Recorders are affiliated to the Church Recording
Society, the national society for Church Recording.

If you’d like to know more about Church Recording in general or about joining our group, please contact Denise Schofield using the 'Contact Us' button above. You don't need to have expert knowledge, we can give you all the help and training you need – new members are always welcome!
